Whilst most of us go to work to earn in order to support our lifestyles. This does not mean that our working surroundings are not important. The reverse is in fact true, the more stimulated we are the more productive we become. So why is landscape design that surrounds industrial / commercial spaces so poor? Simply put it is due to short term and badly conceived ideas.

Just the drive on the M6 through Birmingham’s Industrial wasteland is enough to make me wonder how anyone can possibly live or want to live in Birmingham. What maniac local authority could have possibly thought that by exposing all those vast swathes of industrial buildings would impress passing motorists – did they somehow conceive that to do so looked somehow powerful? Impressive?

No, no one could be bothered until it turned into an issue of such magnitude that to do anything seems to be impossible. I would love to see a case study of how much more successful Birmingham would have been if drivers on the M6 could drive through unaware of the carnage beyond the screening or even better attractively landscaped!
