The media and gardens - setting the trends?
The current trend of TV garden
makeover programmes are causing problems for people when they try to decide
on the level of garden maintenance they are prepared to accept. Putting
in huge amounts of decking and laying architectural membrane everywhere
is not the only way to go. It’s just a quick solution for TV programmes
whose agenda is to fill programme times precisely.
In a recent discussion with Andy Williams Director of Williams
Estates Agents we discussed gardens and their influence on house prices.
Which lead to Andy stating that he feels that a new trend is emerging.
A trend towards people opting to buy houses with very small gardens “because
very small gardens are considered low maintenance”.
Maintenance can be attributed to how the garden has been designed, e.g.
size, the hardscaping, the softscaping and a number of other factors within
the garden determines whether the garden can be considered to have high,
low or even medium levels of maintenance – it is untrue to say that
it is related to size alone. It is perfectly possible to have a stunningly
planted low maintenance garden, if the right plants and suitable hardscaping
materials have been used.
Yet looking after a garden need not be either difficult or time consuming and can be done with the minimum of knowledge.
