Project title: Creative solutions using decking to provide better access to a problem garden
Project type: Inovative solutions
Background: A garden with difficult access via steep steps, which became slippery in damp conditions, meant that the rear garden was overgrown and unused
Brief: The client wanted to original steps converting to a lesser angle to improve access and to make access child friendly
Client: A young professional couple with a 3-year-old child
Outdoor space: A space 4M * 6M (at the widest point)
Aspect: West
Budget: £3,000 Max
Problems: Whilst it would have been possible to make the steps child friendly, we felt there was a better solution, which whilst costing more would provide both better access, utilise unused space and provide a great and unusual multi-purpose area.

Solution: The existing bathroom was quite large 5m * 4m, large enough to provide enough space to partition off to create a corridor and still have a sizable bathroom. The corridor leads through stabled doors to a suspended decking area with balustrade for safety. There now exists a suspended decking area, which has multiple uses seating, dining space for up to about 20 people. Best of all it provides easy access to a once unused garden.
Materials: rough sawn 4" * 1" timber for additional grip, in damp conditions, 6" * 2" supporting joists
Lighting: Flood lighting PIR’s * 2 for safe usage at night
